During his 20 years on the Second District Court of Appeal, he was the author of more than five hundred published opinions. His store of legal knowledge has earned him acclaim from the bar as “one of the best,” and “four star.” His expertise, especially in personal injury, business litigation and employment cases, permits him to take the parties’ differences and help evolve them into a shared perception that results in workable settlements.

Prior to his appointment to the Appellate bench, Justice Ashby was a private attorney. He served as Assistant District Attorney for the County of Ventura, and was that county’s first County Counsel. He also served as Chief Assistant Attorney General for the State of California. In his forty years as a lawyer and judge, he has handled almost every conceivable legal issue and has seen the rest. He has been a private judge since August of 1992.

BACKGROUND AND EDUCATION:

Justice Ashby was born in New Jersey and attended Rutgers University. His family moved to New Mexico in 1950. He graduated from the University of New Mexico with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1952. After serving with the Army in Korea, he received his Juris Doctorate from the University of San Francisco in 1958. He was admitted to the California Bar in January 1959, and to the New Mexico Bar in August 1959.
