| Justice Ashby is known for his impeccable integrity, and his solid effectiveness has won him widespread respect among litigators. Because of his incisive intellect and his unique ability to evaluate facts and legal issues, he can express legal concepts in a way that makes them clear and understandable to both lawyers and laymen. He is recognized for his ability to bring parties together to reach settlements in even the most complicated or strenuously disputed cases.
During his 20 years on the Second District Court of Appeal, he was the author of more than five hundred published opinions. His store of legal knowledge has earned him acclaim from the bar as one of the best, and four star. His expertise, especially in personal injury, business litigation and employment cases, permits him to take the parties differences and help evolve them into a shared perception that results in workable settlements. Prior to his appointment to the Appellate bench, Justice Ashby was a private attorney. He served as Assistant District Attorney for the County of Ventura, and was that countys first County Counsel. He also served as Chief Assistant Attorney General for the State of California. In his forty years as a lawyer and judge, he has handled almost every conceivable legal issue and has seen the rest. He has been a private judge since August of 1992. BACKGROUND AND EDUCATION: Justice Ashby was born in New Jersey and attended Rutgers University. His family moved to New Mexico in 1950. He graduated from the University of New Mexico with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1952. After serving with the Army in Korea, he received his Juris Doctorate from the University of San Francisco in 1958.
