Hon. Jack Newman, Ret.
Since his retirement from the Superior Court in 1996, Judge Newman has mediated, arbitrated, and served as a discovery referee and special master in a multitude of cases.

There are many highlights to Judge Newman’s 20-year career as a member of the Los Angeles Municipal and Superior Courts, including his tenure as assistant presiding judge in 1980, as Vice President of the California Judges Association, and his receipt of the “President’s Award” from the Beverly Hills Bar Association in 1996. He served several times as a judge pro tempore of the Court of Appeal, which yielded seven published opinions, one of which was adopted by the California Supreme Court as its own (People v. Leyba (1981) 25 Cal.3d 591).

His years in private practice emphasized labor and employment, workers compensation and general civil litigation, and his years on the bench filled out his experience in everything from Law and Motion to the Appellate Department. He served four years in the busy West District Civil Settlements department, where he earned a reputation for being patient, knowledgeable, attentive, and very fair. Judge Newman has also maintained a high level of participation in continuing legal and judicial education programs, and served on the faculty of many CJER and CEB institutes and programs, which keeps him current on legal trends and recent developments in key legal issues.
