A Superior Court Judge with nearly 30 years on the bench, Judge John P. Shook has a reputation as a "gentleman judge" who takes a traditional approach to litigation and allows lawyers to fully and fairly present their cases without being interrupted or sanctioned. He is known for his even temper and willingness to provide feedback about a case. Judge Shook was assigned to the civil courthouse beginning in 1996 and remained there until he retired. He conducted hundreds of voluntary settlement conferences and often received cases from other courts because of his excellent settlement skills.

CONFLICT RESOLUTION EXPERIENCE

Judge Shook was elevated to the Los Angeles Superior Court in 1985 by Gov. George Deukmejian after serving for two years on the Compton Municipal Court bench.

Judge Shook began his legal career as an attorney in the litigation section of United California Bank. He was in private practice from 1974 to 1983 as a partner with the law firm of Shook, Dunkerly, Thompson & Anderson, where he handled commercial litigation.
