Gary Kearney opened his first law office in the San Gabriel Valley in 1977 and was an active memberof the Pasadena legal community for over 46 years. During this time, he devoted his practice primarily to family law, most recently as a partner in the family law firm of Kearney|Baker. He became a Certified Family Law Specialist in 1985 and has maintained that status ever since. He handled complex family law issues and was counsel in over 65 appeals and 17 writs, the most notable of which were County of Los Angeles v. Pattinson, Herbst v. Swan, Laudeman v. Laudeman, Asfaw v. Wodlerhan, and Starr v. Starr. He has participated in hundreds of successful family law mediations, both as counsel and as mediator.

Mr. Kearney has devoted his legal career to the field of family law and family law appeals. He has handled every aspect of family law as both a lawyer and a mediator, and he is well qualified to mediate all aspects of family law.

Conflict Resolution Experience

Mr. Kearney is unique because of his experience as a longtime family law practitioner as well as his technical background, which gives him the ability to assist in thinking about resolving issues in a manner which is both creative and respectful to all parties. It is his position that every case may not fit into a particular box and should be considered in the light of the needs of the individuals rather than in the light of strict rules. It is Mr. Kearney’s training as an engineer which facilitates a focus on a solution which best works for the parties rather than strict adherence to the form in family law. Mr. Kearney has applied this approach throughout his practice and as a mediator to strive for and obtain a fair resolution in hundreds of cases.

Organizations & Achievements

Mr. Kearney has been a member of the Family Law Sections of the Pasadena and Los Angeles County Bar Associations throughout his practice. He was a Director of the California Association of Family Law Specialists from 1992 to 2002, and its President in 1999. He was the Chair of the Pasadena Bar Association’s Family Law Section from 2000 through 2009. He has been a member of the American Association throughout his career.
